Back in Unit 5040, the atmosphere was thick with tension. Marcus was sharpening the edge of his fridge door with a whetstone he’d found. Chloe was trying to braid her hair, wincing every time her fingers touched a knot.

Liam sat in the corner, the tactical flashlight propped up on a stack of books, reading the dead man’s journal.

The handwriting was jagged, frantic.

Page 1: The scaling is wrong. It's backwards. Usually, you climb the tower to fight the boss. Here, the boss is at the bottom. Floor 100 is the nursery. Floor 1 is the grave. We spawned in the middle. The Kill Zone.

Liam flipped the page. A crude map of the building.

Page 14: The Superintendent. Rare spawn. Immortal as long as the 'Filth' mechanic is active. Do not engage. Repeat: DO NOT ENGAGE. Requires a raid group of Level 10+.

Liam checked his own status. Level 2.

He flipped to the back.

Page 45: Classes. If you roll [Warrior], you have a chance. If you roll [Mage], hide until you find batteries. If you roll [Improvised Weapon Master]... god help you. Scaling is F-Tier. You will never out-damage the armor rating of floors 40 and below. It is a scavenger class. A dead end.

Liam felt a cold stone drop into his stomach.

F-Tier. Trash.

He looked up. Marcus was a mountain of muscle. Even without a class, he was strong. With [Guardian], he was a fortress. Chloe was fast, lethal, her [Duelist] class giving her precision strikes.

And Liam? He was a guy with a stick and a bag of tricks. He was leading them into a fight that a prepared, tactical expert had labeled "suicide."

"Liam?"

He jumped. Elias was standing over him, wiping grease from his hands.

"You look like you've seen a ghost," Elias said.

"This book," Liam whispered, tapping the page. "It says we can't win. It says my class is useless."

Elias shrugged. "Math is math. But variables change."

Liam flipped to the last page of the journal. There was a hastily scrawled note.

ESCAPE ROUTE: The HVAC vents on Floor 50 connect directly to the uptake shaft. It bypasses the stairwell. Tight squeeze. Human-sized rats inside. But it leads up to Floor 51 without needing the Blue Keycard. Only small builds can fit.

Liam looked at the vent on the wall. He looked at his own frame—lean, runner's build. He looked at Raj.

They could fit.

Marcus couldn't. Marcus was too broad. He would get stuck and die.

Chloe might fit, but she wouldn't go into a rat tunnel.

Liam stared at the vent. He could leave. Tonight. He could take Raj, crawl up the shaft, and leave Marcus and Chloe to figure it out. The book said Floor 51 was slightly easier. The roof was the goal. Why fight an immortal boss for a key when he could just crawl away?

He looked at Marcus, who was meticulously cleaning the blood off his shield. He looked at Chloe, who was sharing a piece of dried fruit with Whiskey.

They were trusting him. They were waiting for his plan.

"The solenoid works," Elias announced, breaking the silence.
